Red tide

Sorry to bear the news, and we rarely post, but this is a thick red tide. We are honoured to live oceanfront and we watch the Bay every single day for hours on end. In 8 years this is the strongest we've seen in Zihua. There have been no shellfish divers in front of El Nido for 2 weeks now.

But for the factual account. The last two days have been bad, a dark burgundy-brown color, with the patches increasing in size.
May have been exaggerated by the stronger than normal North West winds the last two days.

The local government is still denying its existence and telling anyone who will listen to them that all our beaches are apt for swimming. Never mind the dead fish already washing up along other parts of our coast.

I read that the scientists who deal with such things are wanting to change the name to something more accurately describing the condition, like "algae bloom" or "harmful algae bloom".
Because "red tide" is very often not red, and has nothing to do with the tides. And we certainly don't want to risk being confused with Alabama.
