Today she had a private birthday fiesta that was completely organized by my lovely wife, Lupita. She has been working on this for a year. The fiesta was attended by over a hundred local women. The city plans on honoring her with a separate event at a later date. She was honored in our state capital, Chilpancingo, earlier this year.
Most folks aren't aware of how deeply she was involved in politics as soon as women were given the right to vote. For decades she worked in the ayuntamiento with numerous administrations, and she did so with complete integrity and honesty.
Local politics was quite different then, and thanks to her and others with whom she worked Zihuatanejo was a wonderful peaceful place free from the types of problems that are commonplace today. Where are such altruistic public servants nowadays when we need them the most?
