A comment about the parade(s) just to put it in a different perspective and maybe make you appreciate it even more.
Participation by students in these events is mandatory. It is part of their grades.
The schools and parade organizers do not provide water or rest periods for the students who are marching and dancing.
All the costumes they wear are made either by the family or they pay someone to make them. The costumes are used one time as the next year the student is in a different grade therefor is asked to portray a different character (usually).
The cost to the families is considerable (in our standards here), for example, a costume will cost anywhere from 300 at the least to well over 700pesos to make. May not seem like allot but when the parent (if they are working) makes an average of 100pesos per day or less then they have to work an entire week just to pay for this. This can be quite a burden on a normal family but again it is mandatory.
Just some perspective based on personal experience.
