Middle of the week yet the hotels in Ixtapa are jam packed with thousands of tourists who mostly never leave their hotels except to walk the beach thanks to most of those hotels offering exclusively All-Included plans. The hotel guests feel compelled to eat and drink all they can, leaving them drunk, fat and lazy most of the time and in no mood to explore or spend money off the property. That's the cold hard reality.

Most of the restaurants and shops in Ixtapa's various shopping centers are struggling to survive for lack of customers. Why we allow these hotels to continue sucking the teats dry on our cash cow while giving essentially nothing back to the community beyond a few low-paying jobs, many temporary, is beyond me. I know what I would do to level the playing field if it were up to me, but I'll keep those cards close to my chest for the time being. What a dumb way to run a "centro integralmente planeado".

Someone in Ixtapa mentioned they were chilly last night. Our bay and the hills around Zihuatanejo keep our temps more moderate. The single bedsheet we sleep under was perfectly fine again, last night, though I did use the hot water for bathing last night instead of ambient water as I usually use.

A big shout out to Jauie who pretty much single-handedly got the stupid noisy carpa at Las Salinas cancelled so that its noise and drunk patrons won't be bothering tens of thousands of residents and visitors this year. Good job! Attaboy, Jauie!
:dude:

Though the photos below were taken two days apart and at opposite ends of the sun's trip across our sky, the sky remains the same clear mesmerizing blue and the ocean remains the same calm and tranquil aptly named Pacific. We are so fortunate to live in this tropical paradise. Did I mention I'm The Luckiest Gringo in Mexico? ;-)

I recall from Marketing 101 that goes something like this: "The purpose of the marketplace is to serves the wants and needs of the consuer, real or imagined".
Evidently those AI folks have figured that out even though it is hard to understand what there customers see in that offering, nevertheless, it is true however much many of us think otherwise.

I am not a fan of the "fly and flop" vacation but each to one own. I would think most are happy to see the hotels fill since they do create a lot of jobs just not for the small mom and pop stores/restaurants.

The narco trade also creates a lot of jobs, just not ones we want to see or that benefit us locally as much as others or as much as we could do working together instead of at odds. I don't buy the-jobs-justify-the-business philosophy. We are a community with some skills and not others, with some attractions and not others, yet for some odd and solely greed-driven reason wee keep pretending otherwise. We keep trying to pretend to be what we aren't, and we keep having to bring in folks from other places to do the work because the folks from here mostly do not meet the job requirements. It's been the same old story since Ixtapa and the international airport were built. So why not stop swimming against the current? We can increase prosperity for locals and do much better being ourselves and selling this region for its natural beauty without selling it out or off. We can do better!

Maybe you should set up a commission to approve what jobs you will accept and outlaw those that do not meet your criteria.

Hola Z Rob,

Following is an excerpt from your recent post:

......."A big shout out to Jauie who pretty much single-handedly got the stupid noisy carpa at Las Salinas cancelled so that its noise and drunk patrons won't be bothering tens of thousands of residents and visitors this year. Good job! Attaboy, Jauie!"

I also think that your local President, Lic. Jorge Sánchez may also deserve a round of applause.
Unlike the previous Alcalde, "El Bello" , el Lic. Sánchez may have had a look at the FORTY TWO PAGE ruling, "Recomendación" #053/2017, in my favour issued by la CODDEHUM, that I left a copy of when I met with el Director de la D.A.C.I.E.P.. Sr. Nava López, el día 20 de Diciembre 2018 en su oficina en el H.Ayuntamiento, and took heed to las ADMONICIONES stated in that document.

Bottom line is that la CODDEHUM determined for several reasons, that La Carpa resulted in Human Rights violations.

I have heard several radio announcements that "La Carpa" took their "espectáculo" to a place called Mentiritas in Ixtapa. I hope they are successful there so they don't have a desire to return to el campo de futból en la colonia de La Noria and, as you said disturb tens of thousands of people from 7:30 p.m. to 5 a.m. SEVEN nights a week who live in that zone.

We now are enjoying peace and tranquillity at night with windows open & fresh air as it should be sans La Carpa Corona.

I also want to mention that to file the complaint con la CODDEHUM, I had to provide supporting evidence.
Among that evidence were complaints by quite a number of people in local newspaper articles, and FB publications, etc., at that time which had accumulated over several years.
So, although I probably was the only one who filed a legal complaint, there were many others, who in effect, that supported my denuncia.

When one perceives that their Human or Civil Rights are being violated, I see 3 options:

1. Leave, go elsewhere, find another place.
2. Shut up and live with it, or
3. Fight for your rights you are entitled to enjoy, which is what I chose to do.

As they say: "It's a tough job, but somebody's got to do it". :vivamexico:

SaludosB-)

Interesting story. Congratulations to Jaui for his persistence. I don't know his citizenship status, (Mexican citizen? Permanent Resident? Temporary Resident?) but would guess he isn't here on a tourist visa, which likely would have denied him any legal recourse to file such a complaint.
As a victim of La Carpa's unbelievable noise several years ago, we chose to move away from Centro, rather than try to live with it. I was glad to see Jaui mention the sponsor of this outrage..."La Carpa Corona"....who should have been publicly shamed for lending their name to this zoo.
Jaui's apparent success in getting this event moved or cancelled raises the issue of the passivity of the thousands of locals adversely affected not only by La Carpa, but by all the other audio assaults that occur on a nightly basis in Zihua. Where have these thousands of locals been hiding? If Jaui could accomplish this feat apparently single-handed, how does one explain thousands of locals sitting on their hands for years?

Hola Hole Mole:

I'll be most happy to reply here on the board to some of your inquiries...

I have Perm. Res. here, and I am from So Cal.

And, although the complete name is "La Carpa Corona" when referred to, the "Corona" part usually is left off.
You made a good point about that beer Co. attaching to that event.

Though since events with alcoholic activities here are so commonplace, no one bats an eye.
That beer company name is ubiquitous.
I think for most locals here it goes in one eye and exits the other.

The term you used " audio assaults " is a good to-the-point description.
I use that same term in these situations, e.g. when referring to the thumping & pounding intensity of the "pum pum pum" low-frequency sounds "that occur on a nightly basis in Zihua" as you mentioned.

The bottom line on that is that there are Environmental Norms related to la "contaminación auditíva" that are ignored.
IF those Norms, and many others, were applied and enforced as they should be, the environment would be much more peaceful.

As far as the issues you mentioned of passivity and trying to explain why the "thousands" of local Mexican population "sit on their hands" goes:
My opinion as to what accounts for that is what I would call "Viral" Impunity, Illegality & Corruption.

Evidence shows that people do not want to bother, make a fuss, etc., as most likely nothing will be done.
Just a plain waste of one's time.
At the January - February 2018 Carpa period, my Mexican lady neighbour went to see the then Jefe de la D.A.C.I.E.P. Lic. Cesar Verboonen who in effect told her to go to hell. I was told others had a similar experience.

Option 2 on my post about what to do when your Human &/or Civil rights are violated seems to be the path commonly taken.

Saludos☺

An Economy Should Serve Its Citizenry

by Ernie Gorrie ⌂ @, Saturday, February 02, 2019, 00:36 (2469 days ago) @ ZihuaRob

I have experienced the range of gringo presences in the area.

My first visit was in the early 1980s when I stayed at the Club Med at Playa Linda. This was followed by annual vacations staying at the Aristos hotel. The Aristos was owned by Fonatiur and was built to show the Mexican government’s commitment to a tourism industry. I have stayed at at least five hotels in Ixtapa.

I have stayed at places in Zihuatanejo, including the Hotel Suzy, the Posada Michel, and several other places. I have stayed in places for $14/night and places for $300/night. I have stayed in hotels and rented a house.

Almost all of those places supported two things. They supported the local economy. They supported some level of “connection” between visitors to the area and residents of the area.

My experience of all-inclusive was limited to a work-related promotional exposure. I learned that all-inclusive thrive on limiting contact between gringos and local people. They thrive on keeping money within the property, adversely affecting the local economy. One all-inclusive manager was proud that he could “food and drink” people for less than US$10/day because they brought their supplies in bulk from Mexico City.

I believe that the economy ought not to support the holders of capital. The economy ought not to be the master of the citizenry, it ought to be the servant of the citizenry.

I am not a citizen of Mexico, so I think I ought not to interfere with its politics. But I am interested in learning Rob’s views on the proper relationship between the people and the economy.
