Canada1

As a gay man living here in Zihuatanejo I have looked into this extensively. There aren't any gay specific bars that the LGBT community in Canada and the U.S. would recognize as such based on their experiences at home. As others have stated though, my partner and I have been to many of the local bars and restaurants and engaged in light public displays of affection (i.e. holding hands, kissing, dancing together, etc.) and never had a problem. I wouldn't expect your friends to have a problem at any of the bars/restaurants in the tourist areas of Zihuatanejo.

The are terrible neighbors who have been torturing their neighbors for years with their excessive noise, for which reason I refuse to recommend that establishment.

Thanks to both of you but they are looking for specifics rather than generalities.

There are no gay bars I'm aware of that I could recommend to non-Spanish speaking foreigners. Gay tourists are welcome at any place other tourists are welcome, but there has never really been much of a gay scene in Zihuatanejo, particularly when it comes to gay tourists. Different culture altogether. They'll just have to hang with the rest of us.

Generally I would agree with what you say with the following observation:

During my early years of visiting here I don't believe I ever heard anyone commenting or indicating other people were gay or lesbian or otherwise.

Then the past few years, since the U.S. passed the anti-discrimination laws and alternate became more accepted into the U.S. mainstream I was amazed the number of people here who came out of the closet or were otherwise "outed"".

Mexico is way different than the US, and presumably Canada in terms of tolerence of different sexuality. In all of our years of travels in Mexico for extended periods, we have found that the people are very tolerant of homosexuality, cross dressing, and all that jazz. They just don't really seem to care much what anyone's sexuality or leanings are. We have always thought the US could learn tolerance by observing how people are treated.

That being said, there are probably gay bars in Zihuatanejo/Ixtapa, but we don't think that a same sex couple is going to have any issues from anyone living in the area.

I'll likely be attacked for this, but that's to be expected, unfortunately.

Thanks to all, I am sure they will find their way in our lovely towns.
