Late last night there was a shootout and chase in Zihuatanejo that apparently started in Colonia Darío Galeana, went to El Embalse, La Boquita, El Hujal and other parts near downtown Zihuatanejo. As usual, no authorities arrived on the scene until well over half an hour after the last bullet was fired, giving the criminals ample time to recover their dead and wounded and disappear. So while some of the fringe local media reported there were between 10 and 15 dead and wounded, the official number is zero since no bodies or wounded were found. I don't know if any blood was found. I've heard recordings of the shootout, but amazingly there don't seem to be any videos that have been made public, probably out of fear. It appears the government intends to cover this up, as they usually do, and the principal local media who receive considerable remuneration from the municipal government will neither investigate further nor question official proclamations or behavior, which I find rather disappointing. The local government seems to refuse to improve local public security or even accept any responsibility for it, something else I find extremely disappointing since public security begins at home, not in offices of people who don't live here hundreds of kilometers away. I regret being the bearer of such worrisome news, but then again I'm still amazed that this lawless and remote region of Guerrero was ever selected as a tourist destination without first attending to the historical problems of insecurity, violence and impunity, things too many people pretend aren't problems here. I believe you would rather hear this from me than to have me pretend something most locals are talking about never happened. I guess the bright side is that it appears no bystanders were hurt.

Today was another hot one with the high temperature around 33°C, though with the humidity and heat index it felt a bit hotter. Even the breeze was hot. And the water straight from our tinacos also comes out quite tepid now. And this isn't even La Canícula, the hottest part of the season. That's still weeks away. As warm as the Pacific Ocean is off our coast, there's talk about intense storms and early hurricanes being a real possibility. Something to be on alert and prepared for. While none of the main weather centers are predicting rain for our region, experience tells me that we should expect it any day now.

Whether you want to go sportfishing, sightseeing or snorkeling, my friend Capitán Ramón Olea of the panga Oleaje offers an affordable adventure waiting to be enjoyed. Ramón knows all the local fishing and snorkeling spots as well as what else is worth seeing. His 24' covered panga doesn't offer much luxury, but his expertise in fishing and his local knowledge of our coast and its marine life is second to none! Ramón practices "catch and release" fishing when possible.
