Another cloudy morning this Sunday helped keep the temperature mild for a while until the sun came out. Then the heat and humidity had no pity on folks taking flowers to gravesites and spending time with their deceased loved ones. Things quickly heated up in Zihuatanejo, literally and figuratively. While visitors nursed hangovers from a night of carousing, many locals fought back emotions while visiting the gravesites of loved ones.

We awoke to the extremely disturbing and sad news of the assassination of the mayor of Uruapan, Michoacán last night at a public event when he broke with his security protocol to pose for some photos. He was just here a few weeks ago. Lots of poorly informed people want to cast blame where it isn’t warranted, making for some heated, stupid and bitter discussions. Rather typical Internet discourse nowadays.

Then this evening we learned of a violent incident at Playa Las Gatas where a gunman apparently killed 4 people before escaping the area. No names or details were released so apart from gossip not much is known. Only that two restaurants were involved. I expect no investigative reporting from local reporters or any forthcoming reports from our local authorities. After the incident a police boat with its lights flashing sat in front of the Cancha Municipal during a cultural event this evening at which I believe our mayor was present. Optics that didn't help to calm fears or quash rumors.

Since the mayor was too busy putting on another of her shows this evening to make any public pronouncements on the matter, I'm not optimistic anything of substance will change. This is the kind of thing that happens here every once in a while, but usually you never hear about it because it doesn't happen in such a public place. Several years back my wife and I watched from our window for over 3 hours one night while in the street outside in front of our home a criminal with a pistol tormented some poor fellow he had a problem with at a bar. Though I called the police, they never came, and the poor fellow was found dead at La Majahua the next morning. Such is life in too many places called paradise. You can rest assured for the next few days Playa Las Gatas will be one of the safest places on the planet while a show of farce, I mean force, is made.

Wish I had better news today, but it is what it is and I'm not going to pretend all is just peachy keen. But at least we don't have daily random mass shootings, our government isn't dropping bombs on civilians, and our president isn't openly accepting bribes, having Great Gatsby parties, or pardoning criminals. Yeah, I know, small consolation, but I still love being a Mexican and living right here.

Oh, I almost forgot to mention, it sort of sprinkled tonight. More like the sky was crying.
