Huatulco is a nice clean friendly place to visit. Taxi drivers are honest and do not try to rip you off…unlike Zihuatanejo. Was just recently in Panama City and felt a strange vibe from the people there. I questioned our taxi driver about it and his response was “Señor,they think you are American “….. I am not.

WestJet is the only airline operating direct flights to Huatulco International Airport from Vancouver International Airport (YVR). WestJet also operates non-stop flights from Calgary and Toronto to Huatulco.

I think WestJet now fly's twice a week direct to Huatulco from Calgary so people must have been using their flight(s) there. As far as I know it is not over visited but not sure.

But it’s warmer than home and is probably better than some of the other big resort destinations on the west coast. Belize is another possibility.

We stayed in Corozal, not far from the Belize-Mexico border. We enjoyed it but didn't find coastal Belize very impressive unless you take the boat over to Ambergris Caye. The wild interior has more to offer (white water rafting, etc.).

We have friends that say Lareto is a place they enjoy. The major destinations on the pacific coast aren’t very appealing, but as Zihuatanejo is becoming less appealing my opinion might change as they are easier for,us to,get to.

I'm in Vancouver BC and have been going to Zihua for decades. We used to fly to Mexico City and then to Zihua...took forever. sometimes caught a ride on a PV charter and flew from there. Alasaka Air started flying a 6 am flight to LAX then change planes and fly direct to Zihua. Early but we would arrive in Zihua in time for a swim in the ocean, shower and up to the sunset bar for a sunset margarita. Then Alaska stopped but Air Canada and Westjet stepped in non stop to Zihua, reasonable departure hour but twice a week and only winter months.
anyway I've been thinking about lot about Zihua and the changes over the decades. I started thinking about other places in Mexico to go but there's something about Zihua and La Ropa that resonates deep in my soul. And I have never felt unsafe there...travelling with another or solo. I hear a great deal about the violence and crime but haven't as yet had any bad experiences. However I just read on the other chat page that a person returned from Mexico City to his home in Zihua to find his caretaker lying in a pool of blood, apparently murdered.
As I am skeptical of all things on the internet I wasn't certain if this was true, but further posts indicate that this gruesome and sad report is true.
I will be in Zihua over the xmas holidays but I am seriously thinking this will be my last time. So Timmac if you have suggestions of a Zihua replacement do tell! Feels like the entire west coast has turned into one American style resort. I'm certain there are exceptions but they are no doubt enclaves for the very wealthy. But hope does spring eternal as Alex the poet says.
And onward we go.

From Seattle, pretty much any west coast destination in Mexico is a lot easier to get to. The only way we can get there in one day is to take a flight that leaves at 6 AM. For us it would mean either leaving leaving from home around 3 AM or staying at a hotel near the airport the night before. We fly to LAX and overnight at a hotel near the airport which aren’t terribly expensive-$200 give or take. I can’t speak to the costs once you arrive since I can’t compare.

Completely agree. Arrived Saturday and will expound on that later. But in essence it was a total shit show and we barely made it to Zihua at all. It's what happens when unqualified reality tv personalities are allowed to take charge.

Zihuatanejo has always been more difficult and more expensive to get to from the Pacific Northwest. Over the years, it has lost some of its charm and “authenticity” and is becoming more like its other west coast resort destinations. Whether or not it is true, there is an increasing perception of lawlessness and danger. We have been visiting for decades but are beginning to wonder if other destinations which are easier and less expensive might not be a better use of our vacation dollars.

Local lodgings are concerned that U.S. travelers may not come due to the flight cancelations. Amazing how much damage a rich assh0le can cause trying to avoid having damning evidence about him released in the Epstein Files.

Last winter there were far fewer USA visitors. Between fear mongering in the State Department's travel warnings and an incompetent former MTV pretty boy in charge of Transportation, this winter will bring even fewer. The damage is going to take some time to undo.

The relatively coolish mornings continue, making morning walks and doing early morning chores more pleasant. But the skies remain devoid of any clouds, and the days heat up quickly. Great for staring at the horizon looking for whales, but boring for photos.

The folkloric musical group Rayo Fandanguero put on a wonderful show this Sunday evening at the Cancha Municipal. They're the same group that played in Plaza del Artista a couple of weeks ago. Very talented musicians. It was a good place to be.

Cruisers should start showing up soon and setting their anchors in our bay. The weather and the seas certainly appear to be in their favor. Steady winds from the north and calm seas make the journey pleasant.
