FWIW— All of these companies are borderline deceptive. They imply that air transportation for medical needs is easy. It isn’t. None of them actually own their own aircraft. So they have to find availability. Second you have to be medically stable for transport. This could be very challenging is you have a pulmonary issue. Finally a receiving hospital has to accept the transfer and they are under no obligation to do so. (As soon as they accept the transfer, they become at least partially liable for the results. So unless they are confident you won’t crash and burn on the way they are going to decline.
While these companies provide a valuable service, they greatly underestimate the complexity.

I'm with you, and "borderline deceptive" is appropriate. I'm amazed at the folks who think they're buying a policy that guarantees they'll be flown to their home country, to the hospital of their choice, should they become seriously ill in Mexico. As you've noted, it is much more complicated....and far less guaranteed.... than that.
A better description than "underestimating" would be "understating" the complexity....that's the deceptive part.

Your mileage may vary. In Washington state for example, our insurance commissioner has very strict rules and only one company sells annual policies. Their annual limits are lower than I am comfortable with so we buy individual policies. Because it is so variable, the best thing is to go to “squaremouth” or other comparison site to get a quote based on your particular circumstances. Once you find something acceptable it’s probably a good idea to look at the Best rating of the insurance company.

The policy we carry is with an actual insurance company which is licensed in all 50 states, which provides some degree of security. We have $100k of medical coverage and $250 k of evacuation coverage.

If it is not too much of an imposition, may we have the name of the insurance company that offers this type of policy? One is often offered these types of policies when purchasing tickets or other travel packages. If one travels often, my guess is that a more cost effective option would be to purchase a yearly policy.

That’s fine. In the meantime, you’re seriously ill and need transport and they won’t provide it because they say the state department says it’s not a place Americans can go to even though the same document says that’s a not problem.
Your heirs might be successful in brining suit.

SkyMed and the others that do the same thing are basically expeditors who specialize in arranging medical transportation. Inherently there is nothing wrong with them, but they don’t have to meet the same standards insurance compNIES.

I know an attorney who would hang skymed if they balked on coverage after the policy language expressly stating that service is not controlled by whatever Marco Rubio does or does not do at the State Dept.

The quote I pulled is from the same page, so goodness knows which one they will honor. The real bottom line is that if you are seriously ill in Zihuatanejo and need hospitalization you will be lucky to be alive to be evacuated. Although we are currently healthy we realize that we are taking a risk in visiting and might in the future should we develop significant health issues need to Vivi locations with more robust medical care. For those of a certain age, it’s probably better to have actual travel insurance as Medicare foreign coverage at the best is quite limited.

page 18 of the skymed policy jargon states Skymed services ALL regions of Canada and Mexico . It does NOT limit travel or emergency evacuations restrictions to match travel advisory levels issued by the USA State Dept.

Wow, that’s shocking. We get Medjet every year as we travel a lot.
That would be horrible to find out you are not covered on the day you need it.

After buying Medjet medevac insurance for the past 4-5 years I recently found out that they do not fly to any area designated as a "no go" by the US State Dept. which includes Guerrero and, in fact, most of Mexico. Mexico City is one of the few exceptions. Buyer beware -it is in the fine print.
