Hope to see some familiar faces (and new ones too) this weekend in La Ropa ????????

At 4:30 this Friday morning the municipal government sent workers to "wash" the Plaza del Artista, the Paseo del Pescador and Calle Juan N. Álvarez. Even with the windows closed they made quite a racket. So that's as late as we were allowed to sleep last night. Small price to pay for living where we do. Made my first sip of our locally grown fresh-roasted coffee taste all that much better.

Practically the first thing I saw on my morning walk was a young man dead on the walkway just past the museum across from the Vicente Guerrero school. Apparently he had a heart attack while getting his morning exercise. Lots of people including schoolkids had to walk past him while the paramedics tried to revive him to no avail. Even if they'd had the equipment to get him alive to a local hospital, the closest hospital for any serious cardiac problems is Uruapan, about a 4-hour drive away. A reminder that our region of Mexico is NOT a place to live or be if you have serious health issues and aren't prepared to literally drop dead. A sad but true fact about living here.

The municipal government has Christmas decorations all along the downtown waterfront, and they're continuing to place them around town. I wish they would respect our amate tree in Plaza del Artista instead of treating it like something that needs adorning. I think they're beautiful trees without anything hanging from them but their own leaves. Now it has more lights than ever blotting out the night sky even more than usual. Something we used to still be able to enjoy before the last so-called remodelling of the waterfront that came with excessive light pollution. And something our municipal government should care about if they actually care about sea turtles as they pretend, since the lighting disorients them both when nesting and when they hatch.

There was a chemical spill of sodium hypochlorite near the Oficina de Correos today that had the entire area shut down for several hours. Our first chemical spill that I'm aware of. I hope it didn't get spilled into the pluvial drainage, since it would then end up in the bay.

Amazingly, there's a chance of rain this Saturday.

Don't forget to visit "Las Iguanas Bazar" in La Ropa next to Casa Tucanes this Sunday from 9 A.M. to 3 P.M. where you'll find the wonderful works of local artisans and merchants and lots of sustainable products.

Also, the Eco-Tianguis "Sanka" happens every Saturday from 8:30 a.m. until 1:40 p.m. in the small plaza in front of the Vicente Guerrero school, across the street from the Museo Arqueológico de la Costa Grande in downtown Zihuatanejo by the waterfront where La Boquita canal runs into the bay. Besides wonderful handcrafts, they feature a variety of homegrown produce, fresh foods including pastries, breads and tamales, fresh coffee, juices and mezcal.
