Starting Friday, cell users in Mexico must link their phones to an official ID

Beginning Friday, each owner of a mobile phone in Mexico will be required to register and link each number with their personal identity by June 30 … or face service cuts. Also, anyone acquiring a new phone or a digital SIM after Jan. 9 must register the phone number before service can be provided.

for 10 years I have always recharged my phone for a month at a time on the street. Only in the last two months have I recharged it online and the only concern there was to recharge the correct phone number. My name never entered it.

When you purchased your cellphone, you signed up for the service "Amigo" or "Amigo Kit" or something similar. I believe if you register and log in to Telcel's website with your phone number, you may be able to find your account info.

But if your phone is 10 years old, then it's time for a new phone.

Gracias for the information. My current telcel phone is an iphone 12 mini I bought on ebay and then had the chip from the old Iphone 6 transferred to the 12. I resist change and miss my Iphone 6 but it was no longer "supported" I would go back to a flip phone if I could.

I would at least like to transfer my contacts if possible to another cellular chip before I lose the number. Being the neanderthal that I am, I am looking for ideas on how I might be able to transfer my contacts?

If you are unable to rectify the underlying issue put your contacts on Google and they will follow you. If it's a dumb phone ask Telcel if there is a way otherwise write them all down and re-enter.

Yesterday I made an attempt at the Tel Cel office in Ixtapa to register the Mexican cell phone I have had for close to 10 yrs to comply with the upcoming Federal requirement. I have always paid for the monthly $200 MXN plan so I never had a paper trail of when the account was opened.

I was told that the account was not in my name and tried to other possibilities of persons that might have been with me when I opened the account. I struck out on that and the Telcel employee told me for privacy reasons they could not give me the name of the person to whom my cell number was assigned.

This is going to cause me problems besides just communication as I have two bank accounts linked to it. I would at least like to transfer my contacts if possible to another cellular chip before I lose the number. Being the neanderthal that I am, I am looking for ideas on how I might be able to transfer my contacts?

IMHO this requirement is going to cause a lot of problems in the coming months.

Maybe I'm missing something, but the name your phone is registered to should be on the monthly bill. You should also be able to log into your account on Telcel's website.
