Some of the cool returned this Thursday morning. And the waves are a little bit bigger as a mar de fondo event begins to arrive to our coast. Fresh home-brewed locally grown coffee with locally-grown mangos, fresh pan dulce, and the smiling faces of a loving family topped the morning off. No wonder I keep thinking I'm the luckiest Gringo in México.

There were no banks open this Jueves Santo, nor will they be open this Friday, Viernes Santo. Hopefully the ATMs will keep working so people can have some spending money.

If you aren't aware, Semana Santa is very important to Mexicans where we have the second largest Catholic population in the world, after Brazil. One of the most celebrated traditions of Semana Santa is the Viacrucis de Ixtapalapa, a tradition going back to the 19th century and the largest celebration of its kind in Mexico. Millions of Mexicans will tune in to watch it play out during the coming days. It is a part of our culture. Even an atheist like me can appreciate its spiritual and cultural significance and what this means to the people here, and especially to the community of Ixtapalapa. It's always a fascinating production, culmination of much planning, work and devotion.

We'll have our own march of the Viacrucis this Friday in Zihuatanejo. Visitors are welcome, but please be respectful. It's a solemn and usually a very large procession. Our home on Calle Juan N. Álvarez is often one of the stations where the faithful pause, hear the relevant sermon, pray and sing before continuing on their way. The procession will start at 8:00 A.M. at the church Nuestra Señora de Guadalupe and end at El Angelus at Plaza Kioto.

Located in the first block from the waterfront in downtown Zihuatanejo next to Plaza del Artista, in the same block as the museum. (click to enlarge photo)
