Today we celebrate not the errant wannabe emperor who never set foot on the American continent but the mix of cultures and people that today make up this continent. A lot of people want to call it Día de la Raza, but we aren't all mestizos or "raza", we are all only the human race, so that isn't correct. I like Día de los Americanos, except there's still a problem with the USA not having a proper demonym and pretending to be the only Americans, which is like the French pretending to be the only Europeans, or Kenyans being the only Africans, or China being the only Asians.

What a privilege it is to enjoy such beautiful weather day after day! Perfect for sleeping, perfect for playing, perfect for relaxing. What's a shame is to see all the trees disappearing on the hillsides where new homes and condos keep popping up. It won't be long until we're a miniature Acapulco. Glad I knew what it was like before the destruction of our natural beauty began in earnest. Call it what you want, it ain't progress.

What else is a shame to is see all the money invested in lodgings along Paseo de La Boquita for people who no longer arrive in that part of town. Now the hotels sit there mostly empty, some locked up, with several new lodging constructions now in limbo due to the lack of visitors arriving by buses a couple of blocks away like they used to. What a bummer to have invested so much only to have it be for naught. I'm surprised the municipal government would allow such an economic travesty to happen and that they were unable to either make a deal with the landowner where the buses used to arrive or to find a new location on the same side of town. Lodgings near Cinco de Mayo already had steady clients, so the potential clients from relocating all the buses there aren't filling a need, they're just creating one while leaving a void elsewhere. The uncertainty created by this fiasco doesn't inspire investment. We need municipal governments that put the interests of the community above their own so we can have things like urban planning for more than 3 years at a time.

As the slow season wears on there are more and more people fishing daily along the shoreline for their sustenance. What worries me are the hooks and lures they lose on the rocks that end up buried in the sand at the beaches. I've found several in the soles of my sandals after walking the beach, which is why I wear sandals on the beach.

Imagine waking up here in the mornings, at one of the bungalows at Casa Ki on the beach in Troncones, a peaceful remote tropical village on the warm and friendly southern coast of Mexico: a place where natural beauty still rules and times seems to slow down and stretch out at the same time. A place where stress simply doesn't factor into one's daily routine.
