A relatively cool but breezeless Monday morning greeted early risers in Zihuatanejo. A few wispy clouds soon disappeared once the sun came out, and it felt hot before 9 o'clock. It was a hazy day under clear skies, good for beachgoers, but a bit of a drag for anyone who had to work outdoors. Been there, done that, got the ruined skin to prove it.

Our tourist season is off to a slow start. Seeing a lot more fair-skinned people around, and a few who even say "good morning" instead of "buenos días" during our morning walk. Downtown shops are enjoying some sales, but this evening as we strolled along the waterfront, several restaurants were totally empty, and there were very few people out'n'about. Nevertheless, most of my clients say they're booked for the season with only a few exceptions. Let's hope all those people show up. We could sure use a busy season with lots of sales. It seems the more painted cement that gets poured and the more Blue Flag beaches we have, the less affluent our visitors seem to be. Something I predicted decades ago but that our current mayor seems totally not to get in her zeal to pour more cement. Zihuatanejo is trying to be something it isn't instead of continuing to simply be itself. If people wanted to visit a place with lots of colored cement and a modern look, they wouldn't have chosen Zihuatanejo in the first place. Trying to look like someplace else, only helps someplace else. Not Zihuatanejo.

Has anyone seen the sea lion currently swimming around along our coast? Apparently it's been in the area for over a month. Likely a lobo fino from Isla Guadalupe.
