This Friday morning wasn't as cool as previous days. There wasn't a cloud in the sky except way out on the ocean's horizon. The surf remains small, yet this Friday saw decent conditions for surfers at favorite spots along the coast. The breeze was dead this morning but picked up slightly as the sun rose higher. People were swimming at the downtown beach before the sun even broke over the hills. The local ocean temperature is a very comfortable 28°C, slightly warmer than usual.

Sales continue slow for local merchants, though waterfront restaurants continue enjoying a decent business. Even though there are more hotels and more vacation rentals than ever, we just don't seem to be enjoying the number of visitors with the purchasing power we need that we used to have. All the money the government spends allegedly promoting our destination seems to be poorly spent if not outright wasted. And allowing the big waterfront hotels in Ixtapa's Zona Hotelera I to offer only all-included packages continues impoverishing local merchants and especially the commercial centers in Ixtapa. A shame our local government doesn't seem to take the problem seriously, but instead is more concerned about fomenting rapid overdevelopment, which we don't need, and celebrations that, while fun, don't seem to generate the revenue we do need. I keep saying targeted advertising is the key to solving part of the problem, but apparently all the folks with inflated salaries and fancy titles who get paid to generate tourism have other ideas, NONE THAT ARE WORKING.

Lupita and I want to wish everyone a very ¡feliz día de la amistad y el amor! For us, every day seems like Valentine's Day. But we'll still see if we can't sneak out and celebrate for a while even though it's still a work day for some of us. We hope all of you feel the love and enjoy the spirit of the day.

The music and poetry this evening at Plaza del Artista were lovely. Did any of you catch it? There didn't seem to be a lot of people, and that's a shame because it was a lot of fun.

Don't forget to visit "Las Iguanas Bazar" in La Ropa next to Casa Tucanes this Saturday and Sunday from 9 A.M. to 3 P.M. where you'll find a fun time, the wonderful works of local artisans and merchants, and lots of sustainable products.

Also, the Eco-Tianguis "Sanka" happens every Saturday from 8:30 a.m. until 1:40 p.m. in the small plaza in front of the Vicente Guerrero school, across the street from the Museo Arqueológico de la Costa Grande in downtown Zihuatanejo by the waterfront where La Boquita canal runs into the bay. Besides wonderful handcrafts, they feature a variety of homegrown produce, fresh foods including pastries, breads and tamales, fresh coffee, juices, and locally produced mezcal among other goodies.
