Mexico lost one of its most cherished sons on Wednesday evening with the passing of Cuauhtémoc Cárdenas, son of former President Lázaro Cárdenas and founder of the PRD party that he later renounced. He should've won the presidency in the election of 1988, but it was rigged in favor of Carlos Salinas de Gortari. He was, like his father, one of Mexico's most beloved and respected politicians, credited with helping to end the one-party rule of the PRI.

This Thursday began with another perfect night of sleeping weather that became another sunny day of balmy breezes. Perfect for beachgoers. Our perfect weather continues.

Unfortunately, someone's cruiser sank this morning at its mooring not far from the pier. No one seems to know who it belongs to, which led folks to speculate that it possibly belongs to a Gringo. Efforts to refloat it by other helpful captains were unsuccessful. A damn shame.

Today was the first day of Jalogüín for local children. It will continue for at least 3 days. Quite confusing, but unfortunately too many folks from other places along with politicians desperate for relevancy push the foreign celebration on local children. So huge speakers were set up at deafening volume in front of the museum and at Plaza del Artista as a starting point for the children to set out trick-or-treating in the downtown streets where local merchants are expected to give them candy in spite of the fact that most of them don't celebrate Jalogüín. The official event must've lasted all of 20 minutes after city workers spent hours setting up the music, lights and smoke effects. It just gets weirder every year.

The buque escuela Cuauhtémoc is still expected to arrive this Saturday morning. The Secretaría de la Marina says it will arrive at 8:00 A.M., and it's scheduled to remain in our port until 7:00 P.M. on Sunday. Not the 3 days originally planned. Ticket holders for excursions aboard the ship now have no idea if their tickets are valid or when they will be allowed on board for a tour.

[image]For traditional lodging with a distinct flavor of old Zihuatanejo, I highly recommend Bungalows Pacíficos. Comfortable, quiet and with a wonderful view, this small iconic Zihuatanejo bayfront vacation lodging is located in La Madera and features 6 suites and a small house, all with one bedroom with a king-size bed, air conditioning, kitchen, and terrace. The suites also have two single beds, and the small house has a twin-size bed for family or friends. They have direct access to the waterfront and are within easy walking distance of many excellent restaurants as well as downtown. (click to enlarge image)
