Ola! I'm considering a June visit with my spouse and child (age 10). I found your message board and thought I'd see what I could learn from those that clearly know their way around Zihua.
What do we need to know as first timers coming from the U.S.?
Thanks, and I look forward to learning more. From what I gather, it looks like a beautiful place with friendly people and excellent food and drink. We've traveled in Europe some but this will be our first visit south of the border.

#1 rule: Don't overplan. There's much more to see and do here than anyone visiting for a few days could possibly see and do. You're here to relax, no? Make that priority number one.
With that said, a good starting place, besides reading back through the posts here and in my older Message Board Archives, is my ACTIVITIES page.
Also, you may want to bookmark my AUTHORIZED TAXI RATES page, and learn about the exceptions to those rates explained on the same page.
My BEACHES page will help also help get you oriented, and it has several webcams that are usually working that are a lot of fun to watch sometimes.
Stick with fresh local foods to avoid any problems, and stay hydrated. Tip: most shrimp at local restaurants is imported, not local, though there is a local shrimp farm that supplies a few restaurants, but it's also had occasional problems with health concerns. I recommend many restaurants, and there are too many for me to include them all, but my RESTAURANTS page with its locator map is a good place to start.
You will want to see the following places, but there simply may not be enough time, so pick 2 or 3 and leave the rest for a future visit: Barra de Potosí, Troncones, Isla Ixtapa, Playa Las Gatas, the archaeological site at La Chole (Xiguacán), Petatlán, Puerto Vicente Guerrero, Playa La Saladita, Mesas de Bravo. Some people who visit here also take a day or 3 to visit Pátzcuaro and the surrounding region about 4 hours away by car or bus in the highlands of Michoacán. The evenings are cool there, there are several archaeological sites, and it's a refreshing change of pace from our beach destination. There are frequent luxury class buses to make it an easy trip.
On my MAPS page I've put together a Google Earth Fly-By Tour that will help orient you to our region, and you can also click on any destination marked and get additional information. I think it's a pretty cool part of my website, though I believe it's also way underappreciated.
My daily posts with "ZIH" included in the title as sort of a play on words include a song (mostly Mexican music), a daily photo, and hopefully some interesting local info about things that are going on. Please explore this website. There is no better local source of information for Zihuatanejo-Ixtapa and our region.
Oh, and if you're a mushy romantic type, you may find the story of how I ended up here interesting. I consider myself the luckiest Gringo in Mexico.
¡Bienvenidos!

One experience that is a must for every newcomer to Zihuatanejo is the morning fish market at the docks next to the Cancha (basketball court and public venue space). The fishermen leave the previous evening and bring back their wares to sell early morning. If you aren't an early riser, buck up one morning and make your way downtown between 6 and 8 am. You can't possibly get fish any fresher unless you catch it yourself.
If you go on a Saturday, then you can stumble over to the Museum / Elementary School area (just before the bridge to Playa la Madera) and catch the Eco-Tianguis farmer's market and vegetarian food court which starts around 9 to 9:30 am and runs until 1 pm.
Monday mornings at the docks are fairly slow as many of the fishermen take Sunday night off.

Excellent recommendation! The amount of activity at dawn when the fishing boats arrive is AMAZING.

Rob, you didn’t mention LaRopa beach!
Such a beautiful, white sand beach!
So many great restaurants!
And, my favorite to stay—Villa Mexicana, so pleasant, moderate price, outstanding staff!
That saying, You are in a village of gracious, lovely people.

What would also be helpful is if you could fill us in on more of the details of your trip.
Where you are staying?
Do you plan to rent a car? (The combis are awesome. The taxis are okay. If you stay in Zihua proper, walking is the best way to get around.)
Are you a seafarer or do you want to spend much of your time on the beach?
Do you like to visit ruins? (You will walk a guide if you want to visit the ruins.)
Do you want to mostly relax or are you go-getters who want to see all the sights?
What types of restaurants do you visit? Do you want to go where the locals go? Or do you want to be pampered like the tourists?
Do you love animals? (There is an animal shelter downtown that is very popular with tourists who love to donate their time to cats and dogs. They especially need volunteers to walk the dogs in the morning.)
Are massages on your agenda?
The more we know, the more we can point you in the right directions.

Thanks for replying, and good questions- we're really up for just about anything. Traveling with a very curious and energetic 10 year old that loves the sun, water and sand, so we're thinking we'll spend a fair amount of time on La Ropa Beach. I've been eyeing rooms at the Hilton, which seems to have good options with a little extra room so mom and dad can have even just a little privacy. We're all about getting out on the water, and I'd definitely be up for an excursion or two to check out some of the historical/archeological sites. Otherwise, we're interested in the good eats and drinks around the area, browsing a few shops, and just hanging out. We're pretty active so we won't be total beach bums, so just looking for the right mix of adventure and relaxation.
I hope that answers your questions! We're easy, just excited to try something new and different. So far, everything I've seen looks incredible! Thank you all for taking the time to respond.

Re renting a car: don't. The drivers are pretty crazy and parking sucks. We had a car, but sold it for the previous reasons. For transportation, and later for management of our house, we used Pedro Moreno: 672-119-2398. He speaks perfect English.

Here’s a link to our walking videos in Zihua, to give you an advance idea of what it’s like to walk around here: Feel the good vibes on Playa Principal in Zihuatanejo, Guerrero, México on a 4k beach walking tour!
Swimming in Zihua bay is safe. But be aware of rip currents on beaches on the open oceans. They are scary and can be deadly!

Hilton is a good location. If you don’t mind walking some hills, lots of good eats are a 10-15 minute walk away. Every trip even if we are staying in Ixtapa, we get mole sandwiches for breakfast at Bolillos Doña Mary. It’s just a little street stand on plaza kioto (traffic circle), if you like spicy add chili and salsa. A couple of short blocks further you can get an authentic breakfast or lunch at Fonda Doña Licha. Near Doña Licha on the other side of the street is Los de Cochinita, shredded Yucatán pork also open for breakfast or lunch. For tacos at night we like Pastorcito and Papas Locas. For tacos 24/7 there is La Flechita, sometimes my wife cannot wait until dinner for tacos. Best family Italian restaurant is La Porteña on playa principal, Rob always brags about this restaurant for a reason. If your kid is jonesing for a hamburger, give Rubens a try.
The best excursion I could recommend is fishing with Ramon Olea. When I take the wife and another family with a 10 year old we don’t make it all about fishing. We met at the pier at 7:00 and fish to 10:00 making our way over to Isla Ixtapa. You can have your catch cooked or order off the menu. Great place for a safe relaxing swim and just to hang out. You can walk across the other side of the island to coral beach were there are all kinds of fish to see when you are just wading in the ocean. Your wife can even get a massage there. When you had enough you can fish back to Zihuatanejo or just head back at a faster pace. https://www.zihuatanejo.net/oleaje/
June is a slow time of year here and it may rain. We did come last June and will again this year. Zihuatanejo is a good choice over Cabo or Cancun, you may actually see Mexico here. Have a great trip.

Check out a catamaran cruise on the Picante. Can highly recommend it! The view looking back at Zihua and the foothills is amazing, as well as cruising over to Ixtapa and seeing the cliffside homes along the way and just being out on the Pacific. Great crew and lots of fun. Choices of daytime snorkel cruises, sunset cruises, etc. You can easily find their website.
