CelebraZIHones Patrióticas
Today we remember the Niños Héroes, six young military cadets killed during the Batalla de Chapultepec by invading United States' forces in Mexico City on September 13, 1847. They were serving under the command of my wife's ancestor Nicolás Bravo. A shameful invasion by the USA based on lies and subterfuge culminating in the theft of half of Mexico.
We awoke to picture-postcard-perfect weather this Saturday morning, and it only got better. A nice breeze kept temperatures mild while many people enjoyed their morning walks and runs. I can recall when the only jogger in Zihuatanejo was my wife, and when I was still courting her, I had to run to town from la Ropa in the mornings to try to catch her somewhere along her running route. Though I never liked jogging, Lupita made it totally worth it with her radiant smile whenever she saw me on those mornings, including the days when she didn't run and I'd arrive at Plaza del Artista in front of her home and catch her prettying herself up in the 2nd-floor window that years later would be our own bedroom.
A few visitors showed up today, and local merchants and businesses enjoyed some much-needed sales. The ocean remained calm enough for folks to enjoy swimming, and water taxis to Las Gatas and Isla Ixtapa weren't affected.
We've got another zone of disturbed tropical weather off the southern coast of Mexico that might bring us some more rains during the week. Mario didn't last long as an organized tropical storm, and it's no longer affecting our coast. We're enjoying some extremely mild weather for the peak of hurricane season. Let's hope this continues.
One of Zihuatanejo's most authentic lodgings that best represents the old Zihuatanejo many of us fell in love with is Bambutreehouse. A lovely two-bedroom, two-bath open-air traditional home located on a low hill just a short walk from La Ropa Beach. Features a full-kitchen, daily maid service and wi-fi internet service. A little bit of Zihuatanejo heaven. Currently with dates available this season.
