Ventarrones y PrecipitaZIHón
Sunday was a hurricane day in Zihuatanejo as Priscilla continued gaining strength off our coast. It was cloudy and breezy all day with bouts of rain and drizzle periodically. The rain started Saturday night after an intense wind covered much of the waterfront walkway and plazas with sand. I was worried about the trees whose roots had been cut during the so-called remodel of the waterfront under the previous administration. We lost an old Ficus trees a couple of years ago whose roots had been cut, but instead of replacing it upright or planting a new one, the ayuntamiento put a statue in its place, and just like that another large shaded area disappeared, as did so many others due to the remodel. I expect we lost several trees from the winds that have accompanied this storm system, and we continue receiving them. After the barrenderos cleaned all the sand from the waterfront walkway this Sunday morning, this Sunday evening it was again covered in sand as the strong winds continued.
The port of Zihuatanejo was closed to all navigation beginning at 10PM this Sunday evening, meaning the fishermen are not allowed to work, but most don't work Sunday evenings anyway. Las Gatas had remained open all day, though Isla Ixtapa was closed this Sunday. Electricity was lost in some sectors of Zihuatanejo around the Mercado.
It looks like we're going to get another storm that hugs the coast right after this one, but it doesn't look like it will be as organized, so hopefully it won't be accompanied by the strong winds that we've received from Priscilla.
