Siguen Las CelebraZIHones
A cloudy morning made for mild temperatures. Somewhere it might've rained or sprinkled, but not in our part of downtown Zihuatanejo. That might've been our last chance for the season, though hurricane season doesn't officially end until November 30.
It was actually a very pleasant day. Bright and sunny with puffy cumulus clouds here and there teasing us. Visitors continue arriving, especially extranjeros mostly from Canada. Waterfront restaurants downtown were doing a bit more business this Wednesday evening.
There was a huge callejoneada of kids dressed for Jalogüin. The waterfront was so crowded by the Cancha Municipal we had to walk the street to return home. And unfortunately the DJ in charge of music had it turned up so loud that it was probably damaging the ears of children, who of course were as unaware of the danger as apparently their parents were. Kind of a bummer to folks who pay attention to such things (I didn't survive the 60's and 70's by being totally stupid!). Other than that, it was a wonderful party!
Kids will be out Trick-or-Treating for at least the next 4 days. It's kind of sad and funny at the same time. Something was lost in translation when some of the first local Gringos decided to bring Jalogüin here with their cultural baggage. Locals never got the date straight. Transplants from Mexico City and other big Mexican cities inundated with the same mass marketing as Gringos also had a hand in bringing Jalogüin here and diluting the local traditions of Día de Muertos which in recent years seems to be getting Disneyfied all across the country.
Since local tuna boats speed out far to fish, they currently are afraid to go fishing because of the U.S. military blowing speedboats up as red meat for the very base base of the criminal illegitimate U.S. president. A fear that has spread all up and down the coast of Mexico. This will hurt some local families as well as families elsewhere who depend on tuna fishing to make a living. Their boats look just like the boats getting blown up seen in the videos. The U.S. ambassador got a good talking to by top Mexican officials of the Armada de México and the Presidencia. Hopefully the message got through to sensible people in the U.S. government. We have protocols in place that the USA is violating, and Mexico will always defend being humane even if the U.S. government has lost its ethical and moral compass.
The sandbar at Barra de Potosí is now open. Some folks say it was illegally opened during the night by a retroexcavador. I hope not. So give it a few days for the water to clear up, unless you want to go fishing for robalo. The water along that part of the coast will be dirty for a few more days and not good for swimming.
For folks looking for beachfront lodging at Playa La Ropa, have a look at Embarc Villas 403. Lovely 2- and 3-bedroom vacation condos with terraces and a privileged view of Zihuatanejo Bay.
