Thousands Protest Against Mexican Government

Yes, the corrupt crooks of the PRI and PAN, whom we refer to as prianistas, who've lost their perks and privileges under the 4T of Morena, want back in the game, and their propaganda blitz turned a march for peace into a violent protest. Then, when the government put up metal walls to protect historical buildings, they criticized the president claiming she was scared of her people when, as we can all plainly see, it was precisely because she, like the rest of us capable of critical thinking, knew that soft heads would be manipulated into carrying out acts of violence, which goes against what the march was supposedly about and profanes what Carlos Manzo stood for. His widow even asked people to be non-violent. But the prianistas are having none of that. They want to pretend the government is repressive and a failure, neither of which is true. Presidenta Claudia Sheinbaum and her government continue enjoying the support of over 70% of the population. She is one of the most popular leaders in the entire world.

Thanks, Rob, for your point of view. Generally, I put a great deal of faith in what the BBC reports. However, their article and others from other sources left me a bit unsettled. A demonstration against violent crime quickly turns violent? I don't pretend to understand Mexican politics and it appears many other outsiders are in the same boat as I am.

I just keep praying that someday, we will see the folly of the so-called War on Drugs, aka Prohibition 2, and we will remove a significant portion of the cartels' income. As has been argued on this forum, it may be too late.

In the demonstrations there were groups of thugs well prepared with cutting tools and huge petardos like small grenades. Some tried to enter the Supreme Court building. Others tried to harm the Catholic cathedral. There are even suspicions the U.S. government lent a hand in order to disrupt our government. I have no doubt the criminal regime would love to harm the reputation and stability of the extremely popular humanist and progressive government at their border. I grew up watching the same crap from various conservative U.S. governments as they meddled in Mexico's and other governments throughout Latin America and the Caribbean, especially under Nixon and Reagan. Remember Chile, Guatemala, Panama, and many others. Our popular female-led government makes the USA's look bad.

This is reminiscent of the tactics of the MAGA and other conspiratorial movements. Simply attack the subject matter experts as having ulterior motives and that gives one the permission one to completely ignore their informed opinions and decisions.

Armed Proud Boys showed up at both peaceful No Kings Day protests in my city. That's what you meant, right?

BTW, I'm afraid the Proud Boys didn't have the intimidating effect they were anticipating. The grey-haired tuba player in the marching band followed them around and drowned them out.

That was so fun to write that I have to repeat it: Armed Proud Boys were driven out by an old tuba player. :-D

Agreed that many years alone do not make for a reliable source of subject matter. Wisdom comes from those many years combined with a passion for the art and science of one's subject and the courage to seek the truth no matter what. The glaring example of this was Dr. Anthony Fauci, former Chief Medical Advisor to the President of United States. He started his career in the Reagan Administration in the depths of the AIDS hysteria when the politicos in power were terrified even to mouth the word condom. He ended his career during the worst pandemic since the Spanish Flu when a certain powerful individual was suggesting that we inject bleach into our veins to cure the disease. Both times, he was vilified by those who put ideology over science and the common good of all.

In this case, Rob demonstrates that same level of dedication to Mexico and its politics. He speaks with authority. Of course, normally one does not want to rely on just one source for all the information about a complicated topic. However, for me, Mexican politics have been an enigma for years. In this situation, I have not found any source that I trust more than our passionate -- ah, yeah, some may say prickly -- ZihuaRob. For that passion and insight, I am thankful.

Please compare this dedication and passion to the misguided, hate-filled individuals who stormed the Capitol. Without any evidence whatsoever, they were willing to believe the blatant lies of the Dictator Wannabe' and were literally ready to hang members of Congress and the Vice President on his behalf. It is not a fair comparison.

You still don't know what you're talking about. Reporters for who? Faux News? TV Azteca? The comments are patently absurd because "this woman" has worked harder than any other president to help all Mexicans. That's why her approval rating continues incredibly strong, above 70%. No one is supporting Maduro. Mexican policy is not to interfere in politics of foreign nations. A notion totally alien to the criminal regime running current U.S. foreign policy. Selling petroleum products to Cuba and employing Cuban doctors is not "supporting Cuba". It's simply having a normal relationship with a neighboring country, something the USA appears totally incapable of doing at the moment.

Anything else you'd like to get off your chest?

You and I obviously have different views on what constitutes showing respect and what constitutes showing disrespect. In my humble opinion, yes, the manner in which you post shows a serious lack of respect for our host.

the Mexicans have had their fill of this corrupion and something will change.

On this point, I believe that we agree. But again, I do not pretend to be an expert on Mexican political culture and norms. I ask a whole lot of questions from Mexican citizens and get wildly different perspectives and viewpoints. I read as much as I can from various media outlets, most of whom I generally trust. However, I still always come away feeling unsettled with more questions than answers.

PS mister whitheads clam that the president has a 70% rating is nuts.
she has far less even in her own party.

Again, various media outlets have different takes on this claim. However, some of the more reputable ones do verify this statistic. Do you trust the BBC? In their recent article about the protests, they maintain that La Presidenta still enjoys a 70% approval rating.

Recent BBC article about Mexican protests

The New York Times claims that the number is well north of 70%.

Google search of what The New York Times says about Sheinbaum

The Mexico News Daily has an extensive article about the protests. It is not flattering to either the opposition or the President. However, personally, I literally have no idea whether or not this particular outlet can be trusted. (They had a free daily news feed which they then suspended only to have them pop up in my inbox from time to time with a solicitation to subscribe. I don't want to subscribe.)

If indeed the protests are meant to curtail the violence in Mexico, then we wish them all the best. Still, we would love to hear your thoughts about how a mass protest against violence turned violent so quickly. What do you make of the reported “black bloc” of protesters? I’m “cheaking” and not seeing.

OK, that’s not completely true. This morning children in Troncones in 1910 revolutionary costumes paraded doing a “call and response” of

“Viva Francisco Madero!”

“Madero vive!”

This is the first time I have heard that chanted during the parade. I wonder whether the children are hoping that Sheinbaum does not experience the same fate.

Francisco I. Madero

In February 1913, a coup d'état backed by the United States and led by conservative generals Félix Díaz (a nephew of Porfirio Díaz), Bernardo Reyes, and Victoriano Huerta was staged in Mexico City, with the latter taking the presidency.

Madero was captured and assassinated along with vice president José María Pino Suárez in a series of events now called the Ten Tragic Days, during which his brother Gustavo was tortured and killed. After his assassination, Madero became a unifying force among revolutionary factions against the Huerta regime.

Yes, quite a fascinating part of history. U.S. history books whitewash it and try to eulogize Taft for "promoting peace" when his own great-granddaughter acknowledges his nefarious meddling in Mexico's affairs to sow violence and political chaos to hold Mexico back.

The violent protests were backed by losers such as the PRI and PAN political parties, who have both become mostly irrelevant in Mexican politics due to their corrupt practices. The protests were also backed by Ricardo Salinas Pliego, who owns the Azteca news media, Banco Azteca and Elektra stores, and who owes hundreds of millions of pesos in back taxes that he doesn't want to pay. Last Saturday there was a much larger turnout in support of Presidenta Sheinbaum than the two protests combined. Over 600,000 people filled the Zócalo and surrounding streets. There was zero violence. No stores had to close. No steel barriers were put up around the businesses or Palacio Nacional. No one was arrested or detained. The presidenta continues to enjoy over 70% support of Mexicans. But no, to my detractors I was the one who was wrong for insisting that I knew what I was talking about, even though I did and they obviously (to me) didn't.

The trash has been taken out.

One rule, and you broke it

ROB you are loitering in Rob’s world, aka in his mind. A world in which he is infallible. He rules over his world by ridiculing those who enter unless they bow down. The many that are smarter than he do not hang out here, only his disciples. I know many that used to seek information here but couldn’t tolerate the bias and insults. There are many sites that provide it without the ego. Employ the adage “ if you are the smartest person in the room, you are in the wrong room “.

I only have one rule here: I tolerate no assh0les. Bye, assh0le!

What if you are wrong?

What if there is another reason?

And what if she is not runing the country?

Here come the Reptilian Conspiracy Theories, QAnon, and their like.

It's going to be so cold up there that we will be wearing enough clothing to act as body armour! Currently assembling layers.

You'll be fine. You've got 4 more days until the next demonstrations and the parade for Día de la Revolución Mexicana.

We aren't really concerned.

Near as we could find out, the parade would be tomorrow, not the 20th.

Just walked around the Zocalo, lots of people, but all calm. Absolutely no signs of the fires that were set on Saturday.

There was a huge Danzón event in the Zócalo of CDMX yesterday afternoon with a much larger turnout than the Gen Z march.
