Una ViZIHón del Futuro
Mexico's Presidenta Claudia Sheinbaum Pardo gave us a look ahead at what's coming for our universal healthcare coverage this Tuesday morning during her morning interview that we call La Mañanera. It will begin with a physical and digital credential that we will begin registering for this coming March. So that until the system of federal hospitals is uniform and unified, they can transfer your data among themselves as well as be reimbursed by the federal government. The dream of generations is coming to fruition. This is part of what is referred to as "La 4t", the 4th transition of Mexico. Mexico continues to progress and move forward.
Another shootout was reported today. This time in Agua de Correa. Four men are reported dead. Of course, the mayor is out of town visiting Madrid, Spain on a vacation paid for by taxpayers while she's pretending to promote Zihuatanejo-Ixtapa. Except that year after year politicians go to Spain and year after year we see so few Europeans as a result that it's obviously not about the Return-On-Investment. So no word from the municipal government, nor do we ever expect such a thing. Even though the killings were targeted, innocent bystanders could have easily become victims. This is unacceptable, and locals expect better attention to this problem by our local authorities. But nothing will change. While violence is down in Guerrero compared to previous years, this is an all-hands-on-deck matter. Not something that can be fixed by people in offices hundreds of kilometers away, as people who don't support our presidenta insist it should be. Public security begins in the community. And we expect more serious attention to the matter by our mayor.
We were hoping for a repetition of yesterday's rains this Tuesday. It was a mostly cloudy day, but not the right kind of clouds until in the late afternoon. Rain clouds were again visible in the sierra to our east, but so far nothing but pretty pictures. The rains in the sierra have been a benefit to farmers, and they've caused rivers to rise and wash out water hyacinths that washed up on local beaches earlier this week. Yesterday's rain only washed the mud and trash out of La Boquita canal. Oops. I still can't fathom why after all these years local authorities still don't take keeping trash out of the canal more seriously. They put on a show and take photos, but nothing changes. Many years ago the administration of Amador Campos tried building a screening apparatus, but it only lasted one or two big rainstorms before being torn apart. But it was at least an effort worth trying to improve on. Instead, it was abandoned, though the concrete base of the screening apparatus can still be seen in the canal near the Puente Blanco (the oldest footbridge between Plaza Kioto and the museum).
A small surge in visitors was noticeable today, both from abroad and from interior cities. Even though it was mostly cloudy, Zihuatanejo's downtown beach was full of folks in the calm warm waters enjoying themselves. I've noticed how the visitors from up north prefer to have their tables on the beach under the open sky or palm trees rather than under the palapas built during the previous administration of the current mayor's husband. Good for them! That's a trend I hope to see continue! Call me a purist or old-fashioned, but there shouldn't be any constructions on the beach!
