Each day I awaken beside the love of my life is the best day of my life! This Thursday was no exception. I almost feel guilty being so happy. Almost. But that's why I consider myself the luckiest gringo in México!

So after all the chisme and speculation, it turns out that La Jaiba Feliz was closed because a drainage pipe broke. But they will reopen again this Friday, Feb. 13 (which is NOT an unlucky day here in Mexico).

We enjoyed another delicious afternoon comida in the shaded garden at El Buen Sazón. I didn't know they served pozole, but it turns out they do, and their recipe is excellent! Every meal I've had there seems like a homecooked meal right out of old Zihuatanejo, and they remind me of the meals Lupita used to bring me from her home before we were married back when I worked in my mother's small furniture store on Calle Pedro Ascencio. Right down to their piping hot handmade tortillas fresh off the griddle and their aguas frescas made with all natural ingredients.

This Thursday was a slow day for Zihuatanejo's downtown merchants. Very few visitors were around, and the place felt rather empty for this time of year. Things picked up a bit in the evening, but only because the Vicente Guerrero school held a cultural event at the Cancha Municipal with wonderful folkloric dancing and music of Guerrero.

This Friday there will be another cultural event, this one at Plaza del Artista. With music, dancing, poetry, artists, and authors. See the details on my Community Notices & Events page.

I'm hearing about regular long-term visitors from abroad having problems getting 6-month visas like they used to be able to get every year. If this has happened to you or someone you know, please post the details here. We need to get this fixed!

Wonderful news about La Jaiba Feliz, they are number one in our list of places to have breakfast. We are there at least weekly!

Tonight, with out of town visitors, we visited a favorite, Jungle Pizza. We don't normally dine there except during the slowest times, but tonight was terrific. Yes, there were a number of people there, but service was great, and the food was delivered extremely quickly. Go visit Ruben and enjoy great margaritas, pizza, salads and burgers. We always forget how wonderful a meal is there. Reuben is a wonderful neighbor and a great host.

I have seen several reports of this on a couple FB groups I follow. The "up to 180 days" tourist visa is no longer a given and seems to be an arbitrary decision by the Mexican immigration agent at the airport. The rationale for skimping on the number of days approved on a tourist visa is not clear.

Some theorize that with the upgraded immigration computer systems, regular long-term tourists are flagged because they are more likely to try and extend their stays through the practice of "border runs". Another theory is that the Mexican government considers a tourist who stays 6 months every year as a temporary resident who should have to go through the formal residency process and pony up the fees and documentation if they want to spend half their lives in México. Or it could simply be misused authority on the part of the agent who stamps your passport. Who knows?

All tourists should have a return flight already booked in order to show the immigration agent if the alloted number of days are fewer than, for example, a rental agreement.

I'm hearing otherwise, which is why I brought the matter up. One more issue people seem to be having when they fly into the Zihuatanejo-Ixtapa airport that they don't seem to have when they get processed at other airports.

Just a friendly reminder that direct flights from Tijuana are domestic. No immigration or customs at the Zihua airport. Make your way to San Diego/Tijuana, check out our little corner of the world, and then fly direct to Zihuatanejo. The Valle de Guadalupe Mexican wine producing region is a real treat for gastronomes.

I don't believe so. The Mexican government discontinued the regularization process for foreigners more than a year ago.
