Not much coolness in the air this Saturday morning. Just enough to make sleeping under sheets comfortable with a ceiling fan on medium. And there were clouds in the region today. It almost looked like a summer day except for the brown hillsides. The humidity continues on the high side, upper 70's and low 80's. It'll be at least another month at least if not a little longer until we can be looking for rainclouds coming our way. Any day now these cool evenings and mornings will end, and the humidity will make the evenings a lot less comfortable for sleeping. Enjoying it while it lasts.

We've been lucky not to have any major fires in the region and no real smokiness in the air. There's a little smoke that is barely noticeable, but nothing like what we used to see every year when it looked like the earth had suffered a war and we'd all lost, gasping for oxygen for weeks until the rains started. Keeping fingers crossed our good fortune continues.

While the streets and beaches are full of visitors, local shops and restaurants aren't enjoying much business. Many visitors brought their food and drinks with them, and they've been enjoying picnics on the beach. We're certainly happy to welcome everyone here, but this is NOT sustainable tourism by any stretch of the imagination, no matter how many times our local government claims it is. Our community cannot thrive and prosper with visitors who have such low purchasing power. Usually the second week of the Semana Santa/Semana de Pascua vacation period brings more affluential visitors. Let's hope it still holds true this year.

There will likely be fireworks this Saturday night at midnight as Domingo de Pascua arrives, so don't be alarmed. Happens every year. I have no idea why people think Jesús would like fireworks any more than why they think the same about Guadalupe. So keep your pets locked inside safely so they don't panic and flee.

Come enjoy the Orquesta Zihuatanejo this Sunday evening at the Cancha Municipal at 7PM.

[image]One of Zihuatanejo's most authentic lodgings that best represents the old Zihuatanejo many of us fell in love with is Bambutreehouse. A lovely two-bedroom, two-bath open-air traditional home located on a low hill just a short walk from La Ropa Beach. Features a full-kitchen, daily maid service and wi-fi internet service. A little bit of Zihuatanejo heaven. Currently with dates available this season. (click to enlarge photo)

Thank goodness there were no fireworks in our area last night, but there was a DJ set up playing disco music on the beach in front of Plaza del Artista until the wee hours, and then before sunrise the Testigos de Jehová were at it with their own rather loud festive music in front of the Museo. They apparently didn't care about waking anyone else up either. I'm not sure their cult leader would approve. I miss quiet and solemn Sunday mornings.

Took our morning walk a little earlier than usual on Saturday. There were several groups who had clearly slept over night on Principal, I guess you do whatever you can to spend a little time in paradise. It was disappointing/disturbing to see the amount of trash that was left lying around from the night before. My initial reaction was to be angry that people don't care or respect the local environment or they just expect someone will clean up after them. But then I got to thinking that there are nowhere near enough trash cans in the area, when we have trash we sometimes have to hunt down a trash can. Maybe the local government could install some temporary ones for busy times like this and then put up some signs encouraging people to use them. Am I making too much sense?

My favorite visual this weekend was seeing a male exiting the bus depot with a suitcase in tow and a clear Kentucky Fried Chicken bag containing three buckets of KFC chicken.

He could've saved the hassle of carrying all that fried chicken if he'd known we have a delicious family-owned restaurant here called Country Fried Chicken that sells the most delicious fried chicken along with cole slaw, mashed potatoes with gravy and biscuits. B-)

Rob , you posted "We're certainly happy to welcome everyone here, but this is NOT sustainable tourism by any stretch of the imagination, no matter how many times our local government claims it is." what is your take on this issue ? Why Cann't local business make a lining off of normal national tourism ? and what should be done to make it posable ? TIA Ed

That's kind of a no brainer. The bus people are more than welcome, but their spending is extremely minimal. The nationals that have money to spend are hesitating because we are overrun with bus people. That's our take.

Zihuatanejo continues losing its principal attraction and its character to more and more cement and stupid rules that prevent people from being able to enjoy our beaches normally. Apparently there are no building codes, no ecological codes. These people were all too happy to see our ecological zones erased and populated. Anything goes as long as it means more cement gets poured. The great mistake of electing a mayor and his wife who own a cement company. For over a couple of decades now, the municipal government and the people entrusted with attracting visitors to our area never understood our tourism and they continue to totally ignore Zihuatanejo's historical niche in the tourism market. They simply imitate other places and pretend Acapulco, Vallarta, Mazatlán, Cancún, and Los Cabos are our competition when our main tourism has ALWAYS been people seeking to avoid those overdeveloped places. They've turned Zihuatanejo into a Disneyandish place devoid of its original character. We barely even have any cruise ships. And to make things worse, they've done NOTHING to curb the tendency by the beachfront hotels in the Zona Hotelera I in Ixtapa to offer only all-included packages. Cheapening our destination and hoarding the tourists they attract so they never puchase anything outside the hotel.

The more we compete for tourists from other places, the more we lose since we will never be those other places. People looking for an Acapulco or Cancún vacation should not come here. They will be disappointed, and I read their complaints daily.

Instead of actively seeking the type of visitors we need, which requires some knowledge and actual work, they stupidly entrust "influencers" and travel agents from other places to send us tourism, and the tourists they send have less and less purchasing power. For the travel agents, it's all about filling charter buses with "thrifty" day-trippers and sending them here with no money to spend. No one local is doing anything to actively seek out the visitors we need who will appreciate Zihuatanejo for what it is instead of trying to turn it into something it isn't. The more I watch us change, the more I watch us lose the tourism we need. Extremely frustrating.

People who stay in condos and luxury homes, some built by speculators who don't live here, an increasing number built by people laundering money including corrupt politicians and narcos, don't bring us the income our community needs to prosper. Hotels and small family-owned inns do, but only if they don't hoard the tourists as the hotels in Ixtapa do. But now we have time-shares in Zihuatanejo, adding to our cheapening and our economic collapse. And our hillsides and beachfronts are filling up with condos. I watched this process ruin communities in Florida. And today, similar to what's happening in places like Spain, Italy and Greece, a growing number of mostly young Mexicans are voicing their concerns about the gentrification process, the increasing cost of living and rents due to the arrival of mostly foreigners who will of course pay more than locals can for lodging and services, pushing locals out of being able to remain in their communities. I've seen this first-hand up close and personal over and over in the USVI and Florida. The dark side of relying exclusively on a tourist economy.

I don't see any change of course coming from the current local or state government. They both want to turn the entire Costa Grande into a solid coastline of tourist development like Punta Diamante in Acapulco. At least, that's been their stated goal. Hopefully our next elections will bring more capable and altruistic people working for the prosperity of the community more than their own. I can always hope.

Thanks for taking the time o make a reasoned reply . Who is the "type of person we need" if not the wealthy OR normal national tourist. That is my question as well has why do you think local restaurants etc can not adapt to supplying the needs of their own countrymen? A sustainable economy should last more than 4 months per year.

I'm not sure if you read my reply correctly. We are only actively attracting a class of tourists with very little purchasing power. We need to attract wealthier more affluent tourists. No one besides me is even attempting to do so. We should be focusing on Mexican nationals at this time while the USA is a belligerent state. Wealthy Mexican intellectuals were the folks who put Zihuatanejo on the tourist map in the first place. But we want them to VISIT, not stay. Zihuatanejo cannot continue to grow outwards. We have no physical space to grow other than our hillsides that we should be preserving for numerous reasons.

Even if we tried to cater to the lower-income visitors, in order for the community of over 100,000 people to prosper we would need more of those visitors than our infrastructure can cope with. It isn't worth the investment. It isn't sustainable tourism. They already complain that everything is too expensive for them.

Diversifying the local economy to provide other sources of income that families could live on is the key, especially in periods of unstable tourism, which is already a fickle industry. We currently have nothing to fall back on besides illicit activities. Locals do what we can to support our neighbors, but too much of our tourism income doesn't stay local, it isn't spent locally. It goes to banks in other cities and other countries. The cash cow only has so much milk to give, and the local community is getting squeezed out.
