RIP Dolly Parton

Our mild weather continued through this Wednesday morning, an absolutely beautiful morning. Clouds kept the morning quite comfortable, and like most locals, we took advantage of it to do morning chores. But once the sun came out so did the heat, and it was rough for folks who had to walk anywhere during the middle of the day.

There were almost no visitors to be seen downtown this Wednesday. Restaurants remained mostly empty, and shops made very few sales. Local businesses have been struggling all year, and a disappointing summer vacation season after a disappointing Semana Santa vacation period hasn't helped at all. Some businesses are already closing up, and it's likely many won't last until the winter season.

But the mayor continues planning her parties and special events as if that's supposed to make up for our failing tourist seasons. Wasting millions of our tax money on the escena del crimen at the pier, not doing anything to get Zihuatanejo a new hospital, and the murder of Alex Serna have all hurt her image. Our regidores have apparently forsaken their duties and are simply collecting their inflated paychecks, and we see no oversight from them or any explanation for the goings-on that have the community quite angry and disappointed in our municipal government.

While Zihuatanejo Bay remains almost as calm as glass, at our local surfing spots things are picking up, and Friday and Saturday are looking like some excellent days to be riding waves or just to be enjoying watching the surfers. But we do have some rainy days coming, and the hot ocean seems to be churning out one storm after another right in front of our coast. So we gotta keep a close eye on things.

We are considering going to either ixtapa (been a few times, but the place we typically book is booked already) or acapulco (never been, the owner of the unit says you can't leave the compound - I've been to Guatemala etc.. bike all over the place... last year in Brazil, the couple in front of us got robbed at gun point on a bike, crime is everywhere now it seems yah just never know )

as your post it seems as though business is closing up? tourism hurting now?
due to trumps acts of violence on mexico? https://www.theguardian.com/world/2026/feb/23/mexico-trump-cartel-boss-killing as if trump cares about cartels https://www.cityandstateny.com/politics/2019/09/trumps-mob-connections/176871/ how many dead bodies are in the hudson from bad real estate deals gone bad....

I get some posts for real estate in the area, seems as though prices are coming down it may be a good time to buy (?)
(same thing is happening in north america esp as the trade war goes on up north)
We might just go look at some places if we go down. Any good real estate agents, I knew one but she doesn't seem to be around anymore. Any things to consider if we do go condo hunting?

I sure miss the beaches, biking, sushi and fresh fish there etc...

(btw I hear yah about government, corruption is everywhere even up north - I could write a book on all the stuff I have seen from failure in an auditing firm https://www.politico.com/news/2025/08/26/ottawa-canada-employee-survey-00527036

Just in our opinions......

The real estate market doesn't seem to change much BECAUSE it's a cash economy. You want it, you pay for it. Yes, financing is technically available, but the rates are so ridiculously high, that it's not a real option.

So, if everyone owns their property, when a place hits the market, the price rarely changes because it costs a minimal amount to hang onto it until you get the price you want/need, We see many, large number of properties sit on the market for years until the right person comes along. Our house was on the market for 4.5 years. It's a whole different world.

It ain't nonsense, it's simply a mental block for too many Canadians and U.S. citizens to accept that they've been prolonging a historical grammatical error. There is no nation named America, and "American" is not a nationality; it's a reference to people and things from a continent named America, like Asian, African, European, Australian. People from the USA need to think real hard and come up with their own demonym. Statesiders, United Staters, United Statesians, USAayers.

:stirpot:

Let's let The Oracle (AI) pronounce:

Is it incorrect for a citizen of the United States to declare themselves to be "an American"?

No, it is not incorrect for a citizen of the United States to describe themselves as "an American." In fact, it is the primary, globally recognized demonym for people from the United States of America.
While the term can technically cause ambiguity because "the Americas" encompasses two entire continents (North and South America), specific linguistic and historical contexts justify its use.
## Why "American" is Correct

* Official Country Name: The United States of America is the only independent country in the world with the word "America" in its official name.
* Linguistic Standard: In the English language, "American" is the standard, dictionary-defined demonym for a U.S. citizen. Alternative terms like "United Statesian" do not exist natively in English, though equivalents like estadounidense are standard in Spanish.
* Global Recognition: International organizations, governments, and people worldwide universally understand "American" to mean someone from the U.S.

## The Context of Criticism
When people object to the term, it is usually from a geographical or cultural perspective rather than a grammatical one:

* Continental Overlap: Citizens of countries in Central and South America sometimes feel that the U.S. monopolizing the term erases the identity of the other 30+ nations in the Americas.
* Varying Continental Models: In English-speaking countries, North and South America are taught as two separate continents. However, in many Spanish-speaking countries and parts of Europe, "America" is taught as a single, unified continent. To someone taught the single-continent model, calling a U.S. citizen "American" sounds as broad as calling a French citizen "European."

In summary, while it is helpful to be mindful of this continental perspective when traveling or speaking with people from Latin America, using "American" in English to describe a U.S. citizen is entirely correct and standard.

The Oracle has spoken.

Yes, cultures such as that of the USA write their own history and definitions, ignoring all else that doesn't agree with their idea of themselves. We already know this and recognize it as an ethnocentric problem, sociologically and philosophically speaking.

* Global Recognition: International organizations, governments, and people worldwide universally understand "American" to mean someone from the U.S.

So foreigners now define what a U.S. citizen is?

"The opinion of 10,000 men is of no value if none of them knows anything about the subject."

## The Context of Criticism
When people object to the term, it is usually from a geographical or cultural perspective rather than a grammatical one:

To someone taught the single-continent model, calling a U.S. citizen "American" sounds as broad as calling a French citizen "European."

Now your AI is simply confusing nationality for continental identity. English-speakers are the new kids on the block here. We don't call U.S. citizens "American" in reference to citizenship, only as fellow occupants of a continent. Yes, the French are Europeans. Your AI is struggling.

In summary, while it is helpful to be mindful of this continental perspective when traveling or speaking with people from Latin America, using "American" in English to describe a U.S. citizen is entirely correct and standard.

Yes, the people of the rest of America will politely humor foreigners who call themselves Americans, but when speaking among ourselves, that's NOT how we refer to U.S. citizens.

The Oracle has spoken.

:rollingonthefloorlaughing::rollingonthefloorlaughing::rollingonthefloorlaughing::rollingonthefloorlaughing::rollingonthefloorlaughing::rollingonthefloorlaughing::rollingonthefloorlaughing::rollingonthefloorlaughing:

Before the USA even existed, the word "America" referred to a continent. Before the first U.S. citizen claimed "American" was their nationality, it was used to refer to the various peoples and nations of a continent that had already been in existence for centuries.

Kinda like the Mad Pedo proclaiming the Gulf of Mexico "Gulf of America" or Lake Ontario "Lake America." Some people's arrogance knows no bounds.

It's really simple.

Check your U.S. passport where it says "Nationality."

Check your U.S. Constitution for the word "American." It doesn't appear once.

Critical thinking seems near impossible for some yet inescapable for others.

I wouldn't call JeffC's manner of communicating BS, but simply an excess of info for people who don't have the time or the need to accumulate the info he's sharing. Many of his sources are reliable and spot on in confirming or adding to the points being discussed. It's a bit of extra work for him. Not much different than what I go through to try to provide my readers with reliable info (that many of you may not care for), some good music (that many of you may not even listen to), and a nice photo every day. He puts the links for his sources. I don't. I appreciate the effort he puts into his communications.

Nope, I have very little interest in the folks who feel this is an appropriate forum for their political opinions (even when I agree with them). The ongoing discussions of the abortion that is American politics is tiresome. The assumption by many that what they are writing actually will accomplish something of consequence is amusing. I doubt any of us bother to decipher his posts. However if you copy and paste it into one of the AI portals and ask for a summary you'll get one, accurate or not.

That "accurate or not" jumped out at me.

In Rob's recent defence of his quaint insistence that we are all "Americans", from Baffin Island to Tierra del Fuego, he wrote:

"AI will always tell you what it thinks you want to hear."

(In putting this post together, I hesitated at the spelling of "defence":
se or ce? Well, what does AI say?
"defense (with an s) if you are writing for an American audience, defence (with a c) if you are writing for a British, Canadian, Australian or international audience.";)

I know: I'm piling-on

Anyway, back to Rob's quote, above. If true, I'm curious to know what verbal gymnastics Rob would resort to, to get AI to give him what it thinks he wants to hear, on the usage of the terms "America" and "American."

We have a saying, up here in the frozen north, that's a take-off on that sappy line from the 1970 tear-jerker "Love Story":

"Love means never having to say you're sorry".

We say: "Being Canadian means never having to say you're American."

We say: "Being Canadian means never having to say you're American."

In the 1970's, many young UnitedStaters would put maple leafs on their backpacks and sweaters when they visited Europe.

I have contemplated doing something similar when visiting Mexico but that would be false advertising. I also thought of buying one of the those tee-shirts that have the Mexican eagle and "Hecho en Mexico" on them. But again, I would be cheating.

Hence, I bought several tee-shirts with the below graphics on the front. They are very popular in Mexico! Many want to have their picture taken with the images.

I bought one of those "Hecho en Mexico" t-shirts with the great Mexican eagle logo, but underneath, it said "Pero Bien Hecho". Why they added this self-deprecating comment is a mystery; I didn't consider it funny at all, and stopped wearing it. When I'm down in early November, I'll try and get one without the "humour"

Call me old fashioned.

I am married. I have some close friends who are very important to me. I remain married with no undivided loyalty.m

I am Canadian. Mexico is a “close friend” that is very important to me. I remain Canadian with no undivided loyalty. I would not be comfortable declaring,

I understand that some people have dual citizenship against their will. A country claims them to be a citizen and does not permit revocation. Others choose to have dual loyalty. I also understand that some people are in “open relationships” either by choice or unwillingly.

I prefer to remain married with one person and have citizenship with one country.

I don’t mind being called old fashioned. Just don’t call me old. :-D

Seriously????l citizen

We seriously considered full-time residency 20 years ago, when I retired, but health concerns drove our decision then, that spending half the year in Mexico, and the other half in Canada was the best of both worlds. For 5 or 6 years, that worked just fine. As we aged, the health care pendulum swung increasingly toward more time in Canada and less in Mexico. Now, as a recent widower, I really don't much care where I spend my days. This winter, I'm trying 5 or 6 months back in Zihua. Citizenship (other than my Canadian) has never really been a concern.

There in no Continent “America”

My high school geography and university geology and university geophysics/astronomy courses are far in my history, but I do have vague recollections of them.

My recollections are consistent that there is no continent of America. North America is on a tectonic plate, so there is a North America. South America is on a different tectonic plate. So South America is a continent. Then there was some geological activity and a third land mass arose. But North America and South America remain on their individual tectonic plates.

I suggest it is proper to refer generally to the inhabitants of Canada, and the inhabitants of Mexico, and the inhabitants of the land between them as being “North Americans”.

I suggest it is proper to refer specifically to an inhabitant of Canada, by their preferred term which might be, Canadian and/or Québécois.

I suggest it is proper to refer specifically to the inhabitants of Mexico as Mexicano, Mexicans, or Mexicanx, as they might prefer.

I suggest it is proper to refer specifically to the inhabitants of the land between them as being American if that is what they prefer.
