Días de TradiZIHones
We watched local sailors and marines hoist the flag at the new gigantic flagpole at the pier this morning. They did not appear to be thrilled about having the additional morning duty. When we arrived at the pier at daybreak there were already people waiting in line for the tours for the tall ship Cuauhtémoc to begin at 10AM. So many people lined up that the municipal government had to call it quits early around 2PM.
A lot of people showed up this weekend, Mexicans and extranjeros. There is an especially noticeable presence of English speakers in Zihuatanejo. They can be seen and heard all over the downtown area where a couple of weeks ago they were still hard to find. Local restaurants that sat mostly empty just a few days ago have been quite full of diners from north of the border the past few days. A welcome sight indeed!
The weather was still warm and humid this Sunday, but not as bad as Saturday. However, there was an extreme tide this morning that flooded all the landings at the pier. It won't be quite as high this Monday. The surfing remains good in the mornings throughout the week, though the waves will be steadily diminishing in size from around a meter and a half to around a meter by the end of the week.
It was sad to see the Cuauhtémoc weigh anchor and cruise off this evening around 6PM. If not for Hurricane Vance, it would've been here for 3 days. Hopefully she'll come back to visit soon. What a beautiful sailing vessel she is, and what a marvelous crew she has.
Oh, here comes a parade.
We're off to the panteón in the morning to pay our respects.
