Unfortunately our confused if not hypocritical municipal government has allowed roads, development and the destruction of our few remaining green zones. The Las Gatas peninsula appears to have been bought by the same people that brought us Puerto Mío and Monte Cristo, and the devastation of our natural beauty, privatization of our cherished views and ecocide continues.
On the one hand a group of squatters was recently removed from an ecological zone "for its protection" after the squatters were there long enough to destroy several hectares of woods, but in Ixtapa near Playa Linda something like 50 hectares of beautiful jungle and woodlands were bulldozed this weekend in clear violation of existing laws to make way for a development for the affluent.
So it seems we have laws that only apply to the poor but not to the wealthy.
Plenty of good laws are on the books that should be protecting these natural areas for future generations of locals and visitors, but nobody appears willing to enforce them. Instead, the public servants entrusted with safekeeping them appear only too willing to bend the rules and even change the law for a few pieces of silver.
A stark reminder that the Revolución Mexicana is not finished.
