Yes, unfortunately there have been some incidents particularly within the past year, and either the problem needs to be nipped in the bud or potential visitors should be made aware of what's been happening so they can make informed decisions. All I can suggest for future visitors is to ask your lodging provider what's being done to assure the safety of their guests and their belongings. Everyone can't (and shouldn't) live inside a walled fortress.
Now you see why I always take a machete wherever I go. Better to have it and not need it than need it and not have it. The only times I've needed it the mere sight of it alone made the problem go away.
