Gee, does it matter, Sam? Obviously they are folks who think you, our potential visitors, shouldn't know about our local crime, pollution, violence, corruption, or unpopular projects supposedly for the "interests" of tourism. They would prefer you continue to believe the spoonfed pabum they continue to try to sell at travel fairs and in state-sponsored publicity that Zihuatanejo is a small sleepy fishing village with palm-lined beaches fronting crystalline waters where all the people are waiting with smiles on their faces and arms open to greet and serve the tourists. So any facts about our area that don't jibe with that fantasy image are seen as a threat by them, because they are not interested in (and possibly incapable of) addressing the problems themselves. Thus, they see the messenger as the problem instead of the problems themselves. That would explain city officials' behavior when the downtown beach was deemed unsafe for swimming due to high levels of bacterial contamination and they removed the warning signs placed there by the federal government. They would prefer to place our visitors' health at risk than have them know the truth. I find that type of attitude by our city officials to be not only highly irresponsible but morally reprehensible. We should expect and demand more from them than this type of behavior. Instead they represent a failing of the social contract we call our democracy.
