To the Director of Tourism:
Having read of your statements in reference to Robert Whitehead and his website, I feel moved to respond. I hope that you receive my words with the respect and sincerity with which I send them.
It is urgent that persons in positions of authority find the necessary - true information and correct attitudes - to confront in the right way these issues so critically important for the future of our place.
It's urgent that right motivations are chosen by each one. It's urgent that we not fall into the trap of the classic errors - personal gain at whatever cost, intimidation, lack of information or understanding of these matters of absolute importance. These errors must not be allowed to stand before the protection of the future of the people of Zihuatanejo and surrounding areas.
I reitterrate that this website has been a major source of information of all kinds for anyone interested in tourism in Zihuatanejo and area. Far from scaring away tourism, it is one of the main if not the main source for attracting it. For my hotel, personally, I have the data to show that this web is by far the main source. I know that this holds true for many of my colleagues, owners of hotels and restaurants.
To say that this website and Robert Whitehead scares away tourism is so obviously absurd that it reveals an attitude of aggression as a reaction to the fact of his opposition to the new pier.
Mexico - a country so incredibly beautiful - is a free country and tolerance of diversity in opinion is a reflexion of the maturity and strength necessary to sustain that liberty. It is time that those types of reactions to what is democracy (such as threats and defamation) are transformed into just and constructive dialog.
It is time that the priority be the good of the community and not personal gain at the cost of a healthy future here. Please reflect on this. What appears great for filling personal pockets will result in destroying the jewel that for luck of birth and arrival in paradise one has a duty to protect.
The information is very clear. One only has to be ready to choose the truth over easy money. One in a position of responsibility must resist short term personal gain at the cost of the long term gain for all and the protection of the jewel that we live now.
Each one of us has that capacity. For the future of all including your own children and grandchildren, I beg you to choose the truth. Do not force your grandchildren to know that for your actions while in a position of governance, paradise was lost completely.
