Well, not only are we here in Zihuatanejo left wondering ¿qué diablos pasó? with the Maratón Náutico de Río Balsas, but apparently so are the winners and other participants. According to "El Sur de Acapulco", the event organizers didn't show up for the awards ceremony held in a restaurant in Ciudad Altamirano, leaving all the pilotos quite upset and fed up with "outsiders" organizing the event instead of the racing teams themselves. The racers showed up at "the designated restaurant" last Friday evening at "the appointed time" to receive their awards and prizes, but first the restaurant said they hadn't been told the ceremony was going to be held there, and then even after they accommodated everyone the organizing committee failed to show up, having apparently driven out of town a couple of hours earlier.

Apparently the disorganization was apparent from the start of this year's race when stages weren't known beforehand and some hours and routes were changed at the last minute.

No mention of Zihuatanejo or why after 37 years the race didn't come here this year. No word from our local government either. Apparently the governor was aware that the race wasn't coming to Zihuatanejo this year, but since he isn't from here what could he know or care about the importance of this race for us?

This is some pretty unusual weirdness even for Guerrero.
