Perceptions of Risk and Real Risk

Yes, people generally make decisions based on perceptions. Therefore it is important to ensure that our perceptions are realistic, based on reality. Poorly informed people will form opinions based more on fears and prejudices. As a reasonable, rational person becomes more informed they modify their perceptions and make better decisions.

I recall reading, many years ago during my studies, that the demographic group that perceived themselves as being at least risk of being a victim of non-partner violence was males 15-24. The demographic group that perceived themselves as being at most risk of being a victim of non-partner violence was males 65+.

The reality was the opposite. Young males were most at risk and older males at least risk.

As one of those 65+ males now, I remind myself to make reality-based decisions, not fear-based reactions.
