Thou doth protest too much

OK, the real quote from Shakespeare is “Methinks the lady doth protest too much.” But one doesn’t have to be a lady for the quote to apply.

Also, I differentiate between a “protest” (against something) and a “demonstration” (typically in favour of something).

During my many years of tourist status in Mexico I never attended any kind of protest or any kind of demonstration. (Cooking demonstrations excepted.) The fact that I was on a brief vacation might have been a factor, but there were other factors.

Now as a permanent resident, I would not likely attend one regarding Mexican matters. I would consider myself insufficiently knowledgeable about the matters and I would not want to be seen as a foreigner telling Mexicans how to run things.

I might attend one regarding a topic involving my country of citizenship. If Canada were to elect as prime minister an autocrat who:

was trying to dismantle public health care;
destroying a health policy body like the Public Health Agency of Canada;
interfering with women’s reproductive rights;
removing rights of non cisgender persons;
politically prosecute and persecute those opposed to him saying, “I hate my opponents”;
and economically subjugate a longtime friendly neighbour among other things,

I think I would be there.

I think there is little likelihood of that. Then again, I guess many Americans thought the same thing.
